The past year has been anything but ordinary for the country and the residents of South Carolina. But, that doesn’t mean progress has come to a halt. In fact, many new building projects have been announced in the past year, including some exciting commercial space expansions. One such project in the downtown Charleston area is well underway.

Office & Retail Project in Progress – 741 Meeting Street

A project at 741 Meeting Street has broken ground and will bring plenty of new commercial space to the Charleston area. Located in the Half Mile North area, developers are planning a new three-story office building between Kinlock Court and Riker Street.

The project will consist of nearly 30,000 square feet of new space. 24,000 square feet will be office space, and the developer, Middle Street Partners (MSP), will occupy 25 percent of the building. There will be additional space for retail and a cafe. Developers have not released the names of other tenants at this time.

This new project is within walking distance of many outdoor dining establishments such as Edmunds Oast, Home Team BBQ, and Butcher and Bee. It is also close to I-26, downtown Charleston, and Mount Pleasant.

Other Major Charleston Commercial Developments

741 Meeting Street is just one of many new building projects underway in the Charleston area. There are many others exhibiting the city’s historic optimism. Just a few of those include:

The Jasper

The Jasper is a 12-story mixed-use building located in the city’s historic district at 310 Broad Street. When completed, it will include 219 luxury rental homes, 75,000 square feet of Class AAA office space, and a mix of retail and dining space.

WestEdge

Located adjacent to the Medical University of South Carolina, with frontage along the Ashley River and Brittlebank Park, WestEdge is a 60-acre master-planned development. When complete, it will include 587 apartments, 500 hotel rooms, 138,000 square feet of office space, a 50,000 square foot Publix grocery store, 35,500 square feet of retail space, and 55,000 square feet of dining space.

Walmart Distribution Center

In July 2020, Walmart announced plans to build a $220 million distribution center near Ridgeville. The estimated build time for the 3 million square foot facility is 14 months. The center will support roughly 850 Walmart and Sam’s Club locations, and is expected to create over 1,000 full-time jobs.
